| PODGE | 10/04/21 - 24/04/21 | | Liverpool-based
musician Podge joins OUTPUT for the latest instalment of our postal
exhibition series, timed to coincide with the release of their latest
EP Samuso. Podge’s music, which they describe as “catchy tunes and
weird noises”, has been making waves in the Liverpool scene since they
began releasing it online in 2018. Samuso is an energetic and expansive
blend of styles, shifting from lo-fi bedroom pop through glitchy
rhythms and retro computer game sounds. Led by sunny lockdown anthem
Go_Out, it is a fully-realised collection of engaging and emotional
modern pop music that sounds completely different from one minute to
the next.
Part of an emerging movement of local musicians who
are exercising total control over their sound and aesthetics, Podge’s
self-shot videos and design work play an important role in defining
their personality as an artist. Their print design - a double sided,
three-colour risograph produced locally at Granby Press
- pays homage to the on-screen graphics from the 1999 PlayStation game
Chrono Cross, part of a gaming franchise whose soundtracks were a big
influence in the creation of the EP. The print features a series of QR
codes, which lead to tracks that did not make it onto the EP.
