Continuing OUTPUT’s survey of creativity in the region, we’re back
at the Bridewell Studios & Gallery for the 2023 Photography Open,
guest curated by Declan Connolly and featuring the work of Andrew Wilson, Lydia Marley, Joseph Hulme, Naomi McAllister, Johanna Wilson & Hester Yang.
The
six artists in this exhibition, who all live and work in Merseyside,
were selected from close to 100 submissions. Their work contains a
breadth of styles and techniques including camera-less cyanotype
photography, archival photography, analog and digital. Once again we
are delighted to be able to showcase such a diverse range of talent
from our region.
I
wanted to think about not just how photography is being used locally
but what photography does as a physical medium; documenting,
memorialising, pointing and making allegory. The photograph can’t help
but make reference to physical spaces, which sometimes distracts from
their meaning - together, these 6 artists contribute to a whole that is
placeless, allowing their story-telling to become more about method;
how camera and chemical allow each to share deeper.
